Dean C. (Dean Conant) WorcesterVerified

Worcester's dual-volume examination of the Philippines from pre-colonial times through American colonization presents a nuanced portrait of a nation caught between competing imperial powers and its own internal transformations. His anthropological detail and firsthand observations provide rare insight into a pivotal moment of cultural and political upheaval.

The first of two volumes on the Philippines under American rule, from the Spanish-American War into the early years of governance. The author, who served in the islands' government, gives a firsthand account of political, social and economic developments.
