Phillis WheatleyVerified

Wheatley's poetry broke through the barriers of race, gender, and enslavement to claim intellectual authority in 1770s Boston—each poem a sophisticated argument for her own humanity delivered through classical allusion and formal precision. Her strategic choice to write within the constraints of her era makes her work a quiet revolutionary act. These verses demand recognition not as historical artifacts but as enduring literary achievements.
