In the Alveran world, the naming ceremony does not bestow identity—it reveals fate. Every person's true name contains, encoded in three syllables, the manner of their death. The first syllable: cause. The second: circumstance. The third: the condition under which the first two become operative. The naming guilds hold the authority to find names, record them, and use them as the foundation of legal identity. To be named is to exist in the record. To be unnamed, unresolved, or contested-named is to exist in the gap beside the record: present, but not quite counted. General Thane commands the only army in the world with a strategic advantage no guild can counter: her soldiers have no true names, so enemy Namers cannot predict their ends. She has built this army deliberately, over eleven years, from the people the system discarded—the unresolved, the contested, the void, the exiled, the inconvenient. The system made her army for her by deciding these people were nothing. She pointed at what the system had discarded and said: here is everything.
