The novel unfolds across four acts: The Apprenticeship (the lamplighter's methods, the boundary that the light maintains, the dark that has been held at the edge for centuries); The Flickering (the lamp that won't hold steady, the shadow that grows when the light falters, the question of what has been waiting for exactly this weakness); The Dark (what lives between the lamps when the light fails, what it wants, and why it has been pressing against this particular boundary); and The Choice (what Fiachra does with the dark that has been waiting, whether she strengthens the light or lets it fail, and the question of whether some things should be held back or heard).
