Theo Ashworth

Theo has been a docent at the Ravenhill Gallery for eleven years. He arrives forty minutes before opening, walks his route through the Dutch Masters corridor, the Impressionist wing, the permanent collection rooms. He knows every painting, every frame, every crack in the plaster. He has found, to his genuine surprise, that this is enough. Then he notices that one of the figures in 'A Gathering at Dusk' has turned around. The painting has been in the collection since 1923. It shows eleven figures in a crescent, all facing a treeline, all with their backs to the viewer. Theo has given the standard description several hundred times. He knows the painting well enough that he could have reproduced it without looking. Now the third figure from the left has its head at an angle he doesn't recognize—turned, slightly, toward the viewer. *Docent* is horror about a museum, a painting, and the question of what happens when the things we look at start looking back. It follows Theo as he documents what he's seeing, tries to understand what's changing, and faces the question of whether some things should be left unexamined. The novel unfolds across twenty-one chapters: The Route (the morning discovery, the turned figure); Documentation (what Theo records, what the records show); The Curator (who doesn't believe him); The Second Figure (when another one turns); After Closing (what happens in the museum at night); and The Choice (what Theo does with what he's learned). Theo is not a hero in the conventional sense. He is a man who has spent eleven years standing in front of beautiful things and paying attention. He approaches the anomaly the way he approaches everything: by looking carefully, by documenting what he sees, by refusing to let his assumptions override his perception.
