Magical realism is not synonymous with fantasy. Where Magical Realism Comes From

These writers were responding partly to the European tradition of literary realism, which they saw as inadequate for capturing the full texture of Latin American life. Magical realism gives writers tools to express emotional, cultural, and historical truths that strict realism struggles to contain. Grief that takes the form of a literal ghostly presence is not less real than grief described realistically — it is more vividly true.
